Port Blair, Oct. 13: The peaceful protest led by the girl students of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) since yesterday has come to a positive resolution today after the Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma personally met the Chief Secretary (In-charge) of Andaman & Nicobar Administration Mrs. Nandini Paliwal this morning.

During the discussion with the Chief Secretary, the Member of Parliament Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma emphasized the genuine and critical nature of the students' demand for hostel accommodation.

He pointed out that renting private accommodation is not only financially burdensome but also poses safety concerns for girl students. He highlighted that not all students have the means to secure alternative housing, making it imperative for the administration to take swift action in arranging hostel accommodations for all girl students within the college premises.

In response to these concerns, the Chief Secretary promptly spoke to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Education Department. Following these discussions, under the direction of the Chief Secretary, the Director (Higher Education) issued a press release today, stating that the construction of the girls' hostel at JNRM College has been completed, with minor finishing works underway.  The work is expected to conclude by the end of November, after which rooms will be allocated to students based on the Hostel Allocation Policy.

Additionally, the press release mentioned that repair works on the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati blocks of the college are in an advanced stage and will be completed in a phased manner, preferably between November 20, 2023, and January 2024. Once these repairs are finished, all students will be allocated hostel accommodations.

Upon receiving these assurances and a press release, the protesting students decided to withdraw their protest. The Member of Parliament Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma commended the girl students for conducting their protest peacefully and in an organized manner. The Member of Parliament also appreciated the Administration for taking prompt action in this regard.
