Port Blair, Nov. 26: AMUL, Port Blair celebrated National Milk Day which falls on 26th November every year to commemorate the efforts of Dr Verghese Kurien, the brain behind the White Revolution. Dr Kurien played an instrumental role in the development of the dairy industry. Dr. Verghese Kurien’s birth centenary and Amul’s successfully completion of 77 years of serving Indian milk producers and consumers by organizing Walkathon.

The walkathon was attended by around 150 members of all DBRAIT students, faculty and Amul Distributors of Islands and others local citizens.

Dr. Verghese Kurien transferred India from a milk deficient Country to a milk surplus one. He has made India the largest milk producing Country in the world and Amul the largest Indian food brand.

Based on the advice of Sardar Vallabhai Patel to our milk farmers to control the resources they produce, by forming cooperatives, Dr. Kurien created the Anand Pattern of cooperatives.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, our former Prime minister, advised Dr. Kurien to replicate the Amul model across the Country and thus NDDB was born.

Operation Flood was the program implemented by Dr. Kurien by creating many State Cooperatives like Aavin, Milma, Nandini, Verka etc. and led to India becoming the largest milk producer in the world.

We now have more than 10 crore farmers covered by Dairy cooperative system.

Dr. Kurien was an institution builder, having founded Institute of Rural Management, National Co-op Dairy Federation of India, NTGCF (Nation Tree Growers cooperative to Federation,), Indian Dairy Machinery Company etc.  He has received numerous National and international awards.
