Port Blair, Dec. 8: The Member of Parliament, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma has raised the issue regarding the increasing traffic congestion and frequent jams along the Junglighat to Garacharma stretch. The issue has escalated to a critical point, significantly impacting the daily lives and commutes of residents, especially during peak hours and evenings.

In a letter addressed to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament mentioned that areas like Dairy Farm Junction and Lambaline are experiencing persistent traffic snarls during rush hours, causing disruptions in the smooth flow of vehicles.

He emphasized the specific challenges posed by the Bhatu Basti Junction, which has become a major bottleneck, creating considerable difficulties for drivers. This junction is of paramount importance as it connects Chouldari, Wandoor, and Chidiyatapu, resulting in a substantial influx of vehicles.

The Member of Parliament advocated for the establishment of a coastal road diversion, believing it would undoubtedly ease the burdens faced by the residents of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and provide a much-needed solution to the escalating traffic issues.

In his letter, he has drawn attention to a proposal by the Andaman Nicobar Administration for the construction of a coastal road, known as the Andaman Marine Drive, from Junglighat to North Bay, passing through Dairy Farm, Dollygunj, and Mithakhari.

He mentioned that once constructed the Andaman Marine Drive could be the much-needed remedy for the escalating traffic congestion, introducing a coastal road diversion would provide an alternative route for commuters heading to Dairy Farm, Dollygunj, Mithakhari, Chouldari, Bambooflat etc., thereby easing the strain on the congested Junglighat to Garacharma route and ultimately resolving the traffic congestion issue.

The MP requested the Lt. Governor to consider and initiate immediate action regarding the commencement and completion of the proposed coastal road project (Andaman Marine Drive).

He added that this initiative will not only ease the traffic situation in Port Blair but also contribute to an enhanced overall quality of life for the residents of the Islands.
