Port Blair, Jan 1: The CPI (M) has demanded to fill up the 413 vacant posts of Primary School Teachers in the Education Department immediately. In a letter sent to the Lt Governor, A & N Islands today (1.1.2024), D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee said that about 413 posts of Primary School Teachers are lying vacant in the Education Department for the last several years. This is in addition to the 198 posts of PSTs kept reserved for the candidates whose cases are pending before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

CPI (M) Secretary drew the attention of the Lt Governor to the fact that no post of Primary School Teacher has been filled up by the Education Department due to one reason or other. He stated in the letter that during his visit to various outstations, he was informed by the people that most of the Schools are facing shortage of Primary School Teachers. CPI (M) Secretary further stated that the Education Department has been continuously assuring the people that teachers will be posted soon after the recruitment process is completed but, in fact, the recruitment of PSTs never materialized. Though the Education Department had advertised 177 posts of PSTs on 11.7.2023, the same was cancelled on 26.12.2023 due to non-finalisation of Recruitment Rules, he said.

Ayyappan brought to the notice of the Lt Governor that during the last more than 7 years, a large number of eligible candidates became over-aged as they never got any chance to be considered and selected as Primary School Teachers. It has been observed that the Recruitment Rules for the posts of Primary School Teacher have been notified after its amendment recently. CPI (M) Secretary said that a large number of candidates are on the verge of becoming over-aged and any delay in advertising the vacant posts of Primary School Teachers by the Education Department will lead to denial of opportunity to such candidates to apply for the posts of PST.

He has further requested the Lt Governor to direct the Education Department to advertise the vacant 413  posts of Primary School Teachers without any further delay which will not only be beneficial to the students of rural areas  but will enable thousands of local candidates to apply for the posts of PSTs.
