Port Blair, Jan 16: The Andaman & Nicobar Police is thrilled to announce the recent induction of four Belgian Malinois pups two each in Explosive and Narcotic Trade into its esteemed Canine Unit. These highly skilled and intelligent pups were carefully selected and have been entrusted to the capable hands of the A&N Police personnel who are undergoing Dog Handlers Training at National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD), ITBP, Panchkula, Haryana, since 11/01/2024.

The Belgian Malinois breed, known for its exceptional intelligence, agility, and versatility, has become a preferred choice for Police, Military & Para Military forces worldwide. Their unique combination of traits makes them an invaluable asset to various Law Enforcement Agencies. The breed Belgian Malinois is renowned for its loyalty, courage, and adaptability, making it an ideal choice for police and security duties. These dogs excel in various roles, including Search and Rescue, Anti Sabotage Checks, Narcotics detection, Tracking and apprehension of suspects. With a keen sense of smell and remarkable endurance, the Belgian Malinois is often considered one of the best working dog breeds.

These four pups are expected to enhance the capabilities of the A&N Police in various critical operations like checking of Contrabands and to perform Anti Sabotage Check at various places like VIP/VVIP visits, Aerodrome, Sea Ports, Vital Installations, etc.

The selection process was meticulous, with a focus on identifying pups with the right temperament and drive for Police work. The A&N Police personnel, present at the National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD), ITBP, Panchkula, Haryana are undergoing intensive training to ensure a seamless integration with the new recruits.

The A&N Police Dog Squad Unit was established in the year 2002 and started functioning with 04 Sniffer Dogs. At present, 11 Dogs are available with A&N Police, which includes 03 Explosive Sniffer, 03 Narcotics Sniffer, 02 Tracker Dogs, and 03 Search and Rescue Dogs. These Sniffer Dogs have been trained at the National Training Centre for Dogs, BSF, Tekanpur, Uttar Pradesh and ITBP, Panchkula, Haryana.

All these Dogs are being deployed along with respective Dog Handlers for various operational duties at the Airport, Sea Port, VIP Duties, National functions, and crime scenes in these Islands. Moreover, K9s are deployed with ANTF teams for the checking of Contrabands. Further, Search & Rescue dogs are trained to locate missing persons, disaster survivors, or individuals in distress in diverse environments, finding people who are lost in the wilderness or trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building, etc.

The Andaman & Nicobar Police looks forward to witnessing the growth and development of these four pups as they undergo rigorous training to become integral members of the Canine Unit. The addition of these Belgian Malinois pups reinforces the commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Police for maintaining the highest standards of law enforcement and public safety.
