Port Blair, Jan 24: On 23rd January 2024, Port Blair Municipal Council in collaboration with GIZ India conducted an orientation programme on waste management for Gated Colonies, School and Government offices of Port Blair city.

The objective of the program was to ensure the proper waste management services in gated communities, schools, and government offices with a commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. Port Blair Municipal Council aims to revolutionize waste disposal practices and contribute to a cleaner, healthier future. There were 30 schools, 06 colleges, 19 departments and 08 gated colonies representative who participated (201) in the program.

Shri. Dilkhush Meena, Secretary, Port Blair Municipal Council on the occasion said that waste management is a critical aspect of responsible living, and Port Blair Municipal Council is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of gated communities, schools, and government offices with customized solutions. Our services are designed to streamline waste collection, disposal, and recycling processes, ensuring an efficient and eco-friendly approach to waste management. He appealed the audience to ensure source segregation of waste at least in Wet, Dry and Domestic Hazardous Waste categories. Secretary, PBMC urged the audience whatever help required from the Gated Colonies, School and Government offices for waste management, PBMC team will support them.

Mr. Aviral Saxena, GIZ Expert shared the presentation, video and learning materials with the audience and explained about the waste management components like collection, transportation, and disposal of waste. Mr. Saxena also shared the current practices of PBMC in waste management like; Waste Depo, Conversion of GVPs, Buy Back Scheme etc.

Mr. Vijay Kumar, Senior Sanitary Inspector, PBMC and their SAT (Swachhta Awareness Team) did the demonstration on waste segregation and composting process and shared the experience in daily waste management activities.

Mr. Avinash Kumar Singh, Superintending Engineer, PBMC said, “We are excited to partner with these entities to implement efficient, environmentally friendly waste management practices that benefit both the community and the planet."

During the program, GIZ India distributed the Flip book (a learning material) for waste management to gated communities, schools, and government offices to create awareness among their students, communities and offices.

At the end of the program, question & answer session conducted with stakeholders and discussed the future to making it success.
