Port Blair, Jan 30: The Cataract & Eye Care Camp organized by Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Port Blair, has reached a significant milestone, having successfully operated about 250 cataract cases within three weeks with the support of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NPCVBI) and the Directorate of Health Services (DHS). The camp in second phase has continued the remarkable journey initiated by the first team of Ophthalmologists led by Dr. Anurag. The current team, led by Dr. Ashwani Meherda, Senior Consultant at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital (VMMC & SJH), has further brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the endeavor.

Dr. Ashwani Meherda renowned for her proficiency in cataract surgeries, has personally conducted over 1 lakh surgeries across more than 200 camps during her illustrious tenure as an eye surgeon. Her leadership has been instrumental in guiding the current team towards achieving sustainable and quality post-operative results. Accompanying her are Senior Residents, Dr. Sunita and Dr. Grisilda Nongrem and in-house Senior Resident and I/c Department of Ophthalmology, ANIIMS Dr. Sneha who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in their roles.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Dr. Ashwani Meherda remarked, "It is immensely gratifying to witness the impact of our collective efforts in restoring vision and improving the quality of life for so many cataract patients of these Islands”

The Cataract & Eye Care Camp not only provides essential medical interventions but also raises awareness about eye health and preventive measures within the community. Through screenings, consultations and surgeries, the camp aims to address the growing burden of cataract-related and other causes of visual impairment in the region.
