Car Nicobar, Feb 26: The Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, Mrs. Jyoti Kumari, IAS visited Car Nicobar progressive famer’s field demonstrated by KrishiVigyan Kendra (CIARI) Nicobar in the evening of 24th Feb 2024. The DC appreciated the IFS model demonstrated at Mr. Leslei Field of Tamallo Village, especially the water harvesting structure, pineapple, brinjal cultivation, etc. and also appreciated Mr. Patrick Jeremiah of Tapoiming Village for advanced vegetable farming; especially Deep Verti Grow (hydroponic system) and low cost polyhouse. She explained how important it is where soil is unsuitable for cultivation. The DC appreciated Mr. Jackson, a 32-year-old from Tapoiming community, for his scientific efforts in pig and poultry farming. She advised him to maintain a high morale and set an example for the youth of the nearby community.

Dr. Santosh Kumar, Senior Scientist Head, KVK Nicobar, briefed the various technologies demonstrated on these farmers' fields and Mr. Mohammed Sarief KVK also joined the programme.

The DC while interacting with farmers, encouraged them to adopt the IFS model with the scientific support of KVK Nicobar, as it provides stability to income and nutritional security. She said that it will not only increase productivity per unit area but also help with overall farm productivity, profitability, generating employment opportunities, conserving natural resources, and maintaining the sustainability of the agro-ecosystem through effective recycling of farm by-products and efficient utilisation of available resources.

During her visit, the DC distributed high-quality seeds of various vegetables, garden tools to reduce drudgery, and antibiotics to pig farmers provided by KVK Nicobar.

Farmers expressed their happiness on the visit of the DC expressing that it will boost their moral to carry out more scientific cultivation. The first and second headmen of Tapoiming village, Mr. Lawrence Mathew and Mr. Simion William also expressed gratitude to DC for her visit and also expressed their gratitude to Dr. Eknath B. Chakukar, Director, ICAR –CIARI.
