Port Blair, March 6: A series of capacity building programme under Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) was organized by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair at Nancowry, Nicobar in collaboration with DAHVS, A&N Administration from 28th February to 1st March 2024. The theme of the training was “Climate resilient scientific livestock farming”.

The trainers were Dr. Arun Kumar De, Senior Scientist, Animal Science Division of ICAR-CIARI along with Dr. Sabita Wati, Senior Veterinary Officer, Veterinary Hospital Kamorta, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services.

Inauguration of the training programme was held on 28th February at Community Hall, Kamorta in which Shri. Anuj Kumar Bharti, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner, Nancowrie was the Chief Guest and Shri Charles Jacob, Chairman, Tribal Council, Kamorta was the guest of honour. All the village captains of Kamorta, Tapong, Champin and Hidui along with 56 tribal farmers of respective villages participated.

The Assistant Commissioner, in his inaugural address encouraged the participants to interact with the experts and draw maximum advantage out of the programme. Shri Charles Jacob, Chairman, Tribal Council, Kamorta thanked the ICAR-CIARI and DAHVS for their efforts and urged to conduct such programmes frequently for the farmers.

On 29th February, a training programme was organized at the Community Hall, Chota Enaka in which Shri Charles Jacob, Chairman, Tribal Council Kamorta, all the village captains of Chota Enaka, Bada Enaka and Vikas Nagar graced the programme. A total of 75 tribal farmers participated.

On 1st March, a training programme was organized at the Community Hall, Pilpillow in which Shri Charles Jacob, Chairman, Tribal Council Kamorta, all the village captains of Kakana and Pilpillow along with 65 tribal farmers participated.

In these three-days training programme, farmers were given training and awareness on different aspect of livestock farming. Inputs (livestock feed, feed supplements and gumboots) were distributed among the farmers.

The SVO and all the staff of the Veterinary Hospital, Kamorta were instrumental in organising the event. The overall programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K. De, Sr. Scientists under the supervision of Dr Jai Sunder, Head, Division of Animal Science and Dr E. B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
