Port Blair, April 1: The Airports Authority of India’s 29th Foundation Day was celebrated at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair. On this occasion flash dance, songs were organised by employees of Airports Authority of India and stakeholders working at the Airport. There was poetry competition, inauguration of Volley Ball tournament, badminton, table tennis and tug of war.
Airport Director Shri Devender Yadav read out the message of Chairman, Airports Authority of India and said that airports are enablers for the fastest, efficient and safest mode of transport linking communities and businesses in the world. Airports serve as a major catalyst for economic development of the region by aiding both tourism and trade. As per an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study, every Rs 100 spent on air transport contributes to Rs 325 worth of benefits and every 100 direct jobs creation in air transport results in 610 jobs creation in the region.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands have always been of strategic importance for the country. Airports Authority of India has continuously invested to boost the civil aviation infrastructure for the region.
A new terminal building with all state-of-the-art modern amenities with an investment of about 800 crores was inaugurated and in operation from last year.
Critical Air navigation aid DVOR has been already in operations from 19.01.2024.
Airports Authority of India is committed for the inclusive development of the region and provided opportunity to Self Help Groups to promote and sell their products Airport, a shop through AVSAR initiative is already in operation from 08.03.2024.
Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Port Blair Airport is set to become operational from April 18. The ILS, a precision radio navigation system, aids aircraft in approaching runways during adverse weather conditions and poor visibility, significantly enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
Operationalization of In-line Baggage Handling System is also in pipeline that will further streamline the passengers processing at terminal building and enhance overall efficiency and passenger experience.
As per Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik), to boost inter island connectivity, construction of terminal buildings at Shibpur and Car Nicobar has been completed, soon we will be having 19 seater fixed wing aircraft operational between the islands.
