Port Blair, June 4: An over speeding bike today badly injured a cow at the Marina Road. The accident took place at around 6 pm when a bike with registration number AN01 H 9490 hit the cow after the rider lost control. The rider managed to escape with few injuries, while the cow’s condition looked critical.
Attempts were made by the general public who had gathered on the spot to help the animal survive.
Marina road has always been the favourite for young bike riders, who find the place convenient to test their riding skills and pose danger to the pedestrians who go for walk. There have been many accidents on this road, in spite of the traffic police posted to check the violators.
Today’s accident also points fingers on the owners of the animals who conveniently leave their cattle to graze and roam around on this stretch of road, risking the lives of people and also the animals. The PBMC had on many occasions impounded such animals who are left to stray on the roads. But all efforts of the PBMC have failed as the owners pay the fine and continue with their business without regrets.
It can be expected that the Traffic Police will keep a strict vigil on this stretch of road, which is also a preferred place for walks. Meanwhile, the PBMC should ensure that the owners who let their cattle stray and are only concerned about the revenue that they get out of it should be given stern punishment.
