Member of Parliament Suggests Setting up of Power Storage/Backup Units for Solar Plants

Port Blair, Feb 9: The Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary of Andaman & Nicobar Administration to direct the Electricity Department to plan setting up power storage/backup units in all solar plants to deal with frequent power cut problem in South Andaman area.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Member of Parliament mentioned that frequent power cuts are causing serious inconvenience to the public and many islands have already suffered losses due to damage of their electrical appliances due to such power cuts, which numbers around 10-12 power cuts in day.

Even after lodging complaints, people are not getting relief from such a large number of power cuts on a daily basis.

The Member of Parliament mentioned that due to the absence of power storage facilities in the solar plants, whenever there are clouds in the sky, the power production from solar plants drops to zero, causing these power cuts.

He also mentioned that installing solar power plants is a smart move by the Administration as it is not only good for the environment but also saves a lot of money but absence of power storage units in all solar plants is causing frequent power outages in the South Andaman region causing huge inconvenience to the public and loss to business establishments.

Considering the problems being faced by the public, the Member of Parliament requested the Chief Secretary to direct the Electricity Department to plan setting up power storage/backup units in all solar plants so that in case of clouds, power supply to the grid does not fall to zero.
