Member of Parliament Advocates for Attitudinal Shift Amongst Women and Society’s Thoughts About Women’s Equality

Port Blair, March 8: The Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma today stressed the need for an attitudinal shift amongst women and society’s thoughts about women’s equality. He was speaking at a seminar organized by A & N State Cooperative Union on the Occasion of International Women’s Day Celebration as Chief Guest. The seminar was organised at the premises of A&N State Cooperative Union, Teleryabad.

International Women’s Day (08th March) is a global day celebrating the Social, Economic, Cultural, Political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender Parity, said Sharma. He explained that the theme earmarked for this year’s celebration is “Gender Equality today for a Sustainable Future” which implies more importance in today’s arena.

Kuldeep Rai Sharma reminded the huge gathering that the story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights. He said that International Women’s Day is all about Unity, Celebration, reflection, advocacy and action. With more women in the governing body, greater equality in legislative rights and an increased number of women as role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The Chief Guest further said that each year the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements, recognizing and honoring them. Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma paid his best wishes to the large number of women and prayed for their wellbeing and prosperity in the years ahead.

Shri. Suresh Babu, Principal, Rajiv Gandhi Cooperative Training Centre on the occasion highlighted on the theme “Gender Equality today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.” He said that equality is needed in encouraging individual rights, equality in education, economic and occupation, Political & Cultural sphere. He cited the provisions provided in the constitution of our country to protect gender equality and explained the activities being carried out for empowerment of women by A & N State Cooperative Union under the guidance of Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma.

Mrs. Sini Raju from the Police Department spoke on Domestic Violence and women’s rights. Mrs. G. R Raji, Faculty Member, DIET, Garacharma made a PowerPoint Presentation on Gender Equality & Motivation. Among others who spoke on the occasion include Shri. P.G Paul, General Secretary, A & N State Cooperative Union and; Shri. Surendar Singh, Incharge, NCUI Project, Port Blair. Few other women present in the Seminar also shared their views.

A Dandia (Dance) was presented by the SHG members on the occasion. Earlier Ms. Nandini, Faculty Member, Rajiv Gandhi Cooperative Training Centre welcomed the guests and the programme culminated with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Shameema Begum, Trainer (Beauty & Wellness).
