U Kavitha Elected as the Chairperson for the First Year Term Starting from 16th March
Port Blair, March 16: The Lt. Governor (Administrator), Andaman and Nicobar Islands had appointed the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman) under the provisions of sub-section (1) Section 197 of A&N (Municipal), Regulation, 1994 read with sub-section (1) of Section 14 of the said Regulation thereby authorizing him to convene a special meeting of the elected members and to preside over the said meeting for the purpose of administering oath of allegiance to all the newly elected members and thereafter to elect the Chairperson of the Council for the first year term and subsequently, administering Oath of Allegiance to the Office of the newly elected Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council.
As scheduled, Shri. Suneel Anchipaka chaired the special meeting today in the conference hall of PBMC during which all the newly elected members of the PBMC were present and subsequently Oath of Allegiance was administered to all the 24 newly elected Ward Councillors of Port Blair Municipal Council for the tenure (2022-2027).
After administering of oath, the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman initiated the process for election to the Office of the Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council as provided under section 14(3) of the Municipal Regulation wherein the Office of the Chairperson shall be reserved for women for the first year of the municipality.
The election to the Office of Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council for the first year term was contested between Smt. U. Kavitha (BJP), Ward No. 24 and Smt. Vasantha (INC) from Ward No. 12 by a secret Ballot Paper.
After polling and counting of the votes, the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman declared Smti. U Kavitha (BJP) from Ward No. 24 as the Chairperson of the Port Blair Municipal Council, South Andaman (2022 – 2027) for the first year term commencing from 16th March, 2022 who won against Smti. Vasantha (INC). Smt. U. Kavitha (BJP) got 15 votes while Smti. Vasantha (INC) got 9 votes.
Certificate of Election was handed over to Smti. U Kavitha and Oath of Office to the newly elected Chairperson for the first year term of the Port Blair Municipal Council was also administered by Shri Suneel Anchipaka, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman conveyed his gratitude for peaceful conduct of elections and congratulated all the newly elected Councillors for the term (2022-2027) and the new Chairperson of Port Blair Municipal Council for the First Year Term (2022).
