Port Blair, March 25: The Mopla community of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are celebrating the 100th Year of its existence in this pristine Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Organization has planned to organize an event comprising of a rally from Chatham to Cellular Jail on 27th March, 2022. The rally is expected to commence from Chatham at 8.30 AM. This shall be followed by a brief programme at Veer Savarkar Park, Opp. Cellular Jail.

The existence of the community in the Islands dates back to 1922 when members of the community involved in the Khilafat movement were sentenced and deported for Kalapani to these Islands.

The first batch of Prisoners had arrived in the Islands on 6th March, 1922 and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail.

Since then, more number of Mopla Prisoners were brought in to the Islands. Post-Independence, the community settled in the Islands and the present community members constitutes the third and fourth generation descendants.

The Andaman Moplah Service Organization working towards the socio-economic development of its members is a non-political, cultural organization and has decided to observe the 100th year of existence by paying rich tributes to its ancestors and conducting befitting events. The Organization in the past as well has been making relentless service for the betterment of the community especially during COVID lockdown by supplying essentials and medicines. Besides this, the organization also assists the members for undergoing advanced treatment in mainland.
