Books IMFC’s Residential Society and Saw Mills For Theft of Electricity Under Electricity Act, 2003

Port Blair, May 24: Keeping in view the frequent power disruptions and its rising demand in the city, Shri Jitendra Narain, Chief Secretary, A & N Administration directed that several teams consisting of Senior Officers of Administration, Revenue, Police and Power Department be constituted who have been ordered to conduct surprise inspection at all commercial establishments and hotels to ascertain their technical parameters, power demand and consumption.

In pursuance to these directions, the Senior Officers from A & N Administration, District Administration, Police and Electricity Department has conducted inspections and raids at Hotels, Saw Mills and Commercial establishments along with residential societies to check the connected load, peak demand and consumption to address the problem of load shedding and frequent power disruption.

The residential society constructed by IMFC was inspected by the team headed by Shri Balwan Singh Jaglan, Secretary (Civil Supplies), Shri Dilkush  Meena, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, South Andaman, Shri. K. Kalaivanan, Superintendent of Police, Shri Prem Singh Meena, Assistant Commissioner (Settlement), Shri Prateek Raj Yadav, Director (Industries), Shri Aditya Kumar Jha,  Director (Power), Shri Deepak Pundir, Director (Rural Development) and Shri Singh Piyush Vijaykaran, Joint Secretary (Vigilance) and it has been found that the flats situated at Teylarabad (Block-I & Block-II) has a total number of 120 flats, out of which, 34 were metered and 58  flats are tapping electricity through illegal means and 28 are under construction.

During inspection of IMFC Housing Society at Garacharma, it has been found that out of   75 flats, 34 flats are having metered connection whereas 41 flats are tapping electricity through illegal means. The theft of electricity shall be booked under clause 135 of Electricity Act, 2003.

The private saw mills situated at Bathubasti, Garacharma and Dhanikhari were also raided by the team and it was found that some saw mills have installed under rated Current Transformers (CT) thereby manipulating the meter readings. The theft of electricity has been noted which shall be booked under clause 135 of Electricity Act, 2003.

The Chief Secretary, A & N Administration has issued warning and advisory to all the hoteliers and owners of commercial establishments to judiciously use the power during peak hours and meet their power requirement by using DG Sets to mitigate the power crisis being experienced in Port Blair and adjoining areas.

Acting earnestly to resolve the power crisis, the Chief Secretary also constituted inter-departmental teams to mobilize efforts for trimming trees and branches. Over 20 teams have fanned in various zones. They have started such works for minimizing short circuits & tripping of power cables.
