Port Blair, July 8: CPI (M) Port Blair City Area Committee has organized a Mass Demonstration today evening in front of the office of the Port Blair Municipal Council at Aberdeen Bazar on various issues affecting the people of Port Blair town.

   Speaking on the occasion, Shri D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee dealt in brief the issues on which the agitation was organized by the party. He said that the BJP-ruled Port Blair Municipal Council has completely failed to implement the Smart City Mission Projects in the Port Blair town and said that despite passing of seven years of its launch in the country, the Port Blair Municipal Council could not make any progress on its implementation.  He said that the BJP-led Port Blair Municipal Council has effected a steep increase in the Property Tax which is an additional burden on the people. He demanded that the increased Property Tax should be withdrawn immediately. Addressing the gathering, Shri D. Laxman Rao, State Secretariat Member criticized the PBMC and Administration for the dilapidated condition of footpaths and Municipal roads. He referred to the unhygienic condition of the Port Blair town. Addressing the gathering, Shri B Chandrachoodan, State Secretariat Member said that Municipal workers are being mis-used and demanded to stop it immediately. CPI (M) leaders Shri P.Banerjee, Shri NKP Nair and Shri S. Surender also addressed the gathering. A large number of party workers and sympathizers participated in the mass demonstration. Prior to Mass Demonstration today, the Party has carried out corner meetings on three days on 6th, 7th and 8th July, 2022 covering most of the Wards in the Port Blair town.  

The issues highlighted during the campaign were (i) failure of PBMC to implement Smart City Mission Projects properly (ii) steep increase in the Property Tax by PBMC (iii) privatization of sanitation work in the PBMC (iv) unhygienic condition of Port Blair Municipal area (v) dilapidated Footpaths and Municipal Roads, (vi) Paid parking on road sides, etc.
