CPI (M) Concerned Over Lethargic Attitude of Authorities to Arrest Accused Involved

Port Blair, July 19: Andaman & Nicobar State Secretariat of the CPI (M) notes with concern the lethargic attitude on the part of the authorities to arrest the accused involved in the communal violence at Diglipur on 12th July 2022.

A businessman of Diglipur was brutally attacked and his business establishments destroyed on 12th July 2022 alleging his involvement in a cow slaughter case.  Even though FIRs have been registered and the details of the accused have been furnished by the family members of the affected shopkeeper to the police, no action seems to have been taken by the authorities to arrest the accused persons involved in the violence. The State Secretariat of the CPI (M) noted that a fear psychosis is prevailing in Diglipur as anybody can be attacked at any time.

Shri D. Ayyappan, Secretary, State Organising Committee of the CPI (M) who rushed to Diglipur on hearing the communal violence, met the family members of the affected shopkeeper at Diglipur.  The family members told him that all the five shops/godowns they owned at Diglipur have been looted and damaged and whatever they earned during the last 20 years has been destroyed. They also told the CPI (M) State Secretary that nobody from the Administration or any other political parties have met them after this violent incident.

State Secretariat of the CPI (M) urges upon the Lt. Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Administration to direct the police to conduct the investigation properly and to bring all the culprits to book and to give a clear message to communal and divisive forces functioning in these islands. State Secretariat of CPI (M) further urges upon the authorities concerned to take all possible measures to ensure that nobody disturbs the communal harmony prevailing in the Islands and to continue to keep the union territory as a Mini India.
