Port Blair, Aug. 17: Sahitya Akademi, Ministry of Culture, New Delhi has requested the Administration to recommend a panel of three veterans in the field of literature for nomination of one member in the General Council of Sahitya Akademi.  The term of the General Council is five years and the newly elected General Council shall come into force w.e.f. 01.01.2023.  

The Sahitya Akademi is a national organization set up by the Government of India in 1954 to work actively for the development of Indian Letters and to set high literary standards to foster and co-ordinate literary activities in all the Indian languages and to promote through them all the cultural unity of the country.   

In this connection, applications are invited from eminent persons in the field of literature, from A&N Islands.  He should be a person who has distinguished himself/ herself in the field of letters, who can speak with authority on the language and literature which he/ she represents, and whose age and health would permit him/ her to take active interest in the deliberations and programmes of the Sahitya Akademi. 

Further the article 10 (xi) of the constitution of the Sahitya Akademi reads “No one shall be a member of the General Council for more than two terms with the proviso that the two terms shall not be consecutive, and that this rule shall apply to all the members nominated in all categories except ex-officio members and eminent writers.” Accordingly, ex members may act while applying.
