Port Blair, Aug 23: David Beckham, an international cyclist who represented India in Commonwealth Games, 2022, has graciously consented to be ‘Youth Ambassador’ of Andaman & Nicobar Police in the fight against drug abuse and alcoholism. In a simple ceremony held at PHQ on 23rd August, Sh. Neeraj Thakur, IPS, DGP, A&N Islands felicitated him and thanked him for consenting to be the ‘Youth Ambassador’ on behalf of A&N Police.

The menace of alcoholism and substance abuse is a major cause of concern in the Isles. To sensitize people in general and the youth in particular, Andaman and Nicobar Police has launched a mass public awareness drive to explain the harmful effects of drugs/alcohol in their personal, family and social life. The purpose of the awareness campaign is to alert the youth and sensitize them against the detrimental and deleterious effects of drugs/alcohol on their physical and mental health, besides causing fiscal distress and family disputes. David Beckham, a youth icon, has joined in this effort to wean away youth from drugs/alcoholism and to inspire youth to follow his footsteps in achieving excellence through hard-work and dedication.

David Beckham (19 years) who hails from Car Nicobar, won gold and bronze medals in under-17 boys category at the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 held in Guwahati, Assam. Next, in National Championship Games held in Hyderabad in March, 2021, he secured first place in AF200 and 01 km Track Time Trial bike and second place in Keirin event.  In December, 2021, he won his first International medals, a gold and a silver, in sprint and Keirin, respectively, at a sports meet in Portugal. He also won the bronze medal in the team event at the Asian Track Cycling Championships 2022. He represented India in Cycling event in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, 2022 at Birmingham. In recognition of his achievements, the Hon’ble LG’s Commendation was also conferred upon him on Independence Day, 2022.
