Port Blair, Aug 25: Disaster Management Training imparted to the students and faculties of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Science (ANIIMS), Port Blair in the one-day Training Workshop held at Lecture Hall-III, ANIIMS on 25.08.2022 to achieve the vision “Develop, Promote and Prepare Youth for managing disasters in ANI” under Disaster Management in Higher Education (DMHE) programme.

The Chief Guest Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, Secretary (Health/Disaster Management), A&N Administration graced the occasion and shared his experiences on disasters and urged all participants attending the said workshop to grab various topics and hands on training completely and be prepared to face any crisis. He also stressed to implement DMHE programme in ANIIMS which can play vital role for strengthening the disaster preparedness in their Institution and also spread in the community.

The Guests of Honour on this occasion, Dr. Munni Singhaniya, Director (Health), A&N Administration recalled her experiences during Tsunami, 2004 and appreciated the efforts of Department of Disaster Management to organize this Training Workshop for building the capacity of institute which is very useful for students as well as Institute for managing any disaster/emergency situation in future. Dr. Omkar Singh, Director (ANIIMS) has also shared his experiences gained during discharging his duties at Car Nicobar in Tsunami, 2004 which devastated the human lives and properties of Car Nicobar and requested the faculties and students to prepare ANIIMS Disaster Management plan at the earliest.   

In his welcome address, Shri Gyan Singh, Assistant Director (Log.), DDM briefed the process of establishment of separate Department of Disaster Management by the A&N Administration aftermath of Earthquake and Tsunami, 2004 and stressed on student’s participation in the disaster preparedness to respond any disaster very effectively in Higher Institutions and also make the community safer. He elaborated all the activities of DMHE programme which are to be taken by the Institute to prepare their Disaster Management Plan and its implementation.

During technical session, Shri T.K.S. Ajayan, Asst. Director (Ops.), DDM elaborated vulnerability profile of this Union Territory and various disaster preparedness activities in A&N Islands and level of preparedness of Directorate of Disaster Management towards disaster mitigation.

Shri Deen Mohammed, Safety Officer, DDM elaborated on Emergency Communication and Early Warning System of ANI and also on various communication elements that renders an institution “well prepared” to manage events during disasters. He also stressed to prepare the Disaster Management Kit in each household. Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas, Sr. Consultant (SFDRR), DDM briefed the preparation of College/Institutions Disaster Management Plans.

Shri Sushil Kullu, Fire Officer along with his team explained and demonstrated various classes of fire and exhibited different types of fire safety equipments. Shri Manikandan, Sub-Inspector, NDRF and team presented different techniques and procedures of Search & Rescue operation during disasters. The vote of thanks proposed by Shri Janik Ram, Assistant Director (Admn.), Directorate of Disaster Management. The programme was concluded by Dr. Vivin Vincent, HoD (ANIIMS).
