Port Blair, Sept. 16: Around 25 students of Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair today fell ill, complaining of stomach pain and giddiness after they were allegedly administered de-worming medicines. The students had to be rushed to the G.B. Pant hospital in ambulances were they remain under observation.
The incident took place in the afternoon hours when the students started falling ill one after the other. The parents remained under panic when their wards did not return home on time. Few were informed by the school while others had gone to the school to check when they were given the information.
Following the incident, political leaders and social workers had rushed to the hospital where they tried to enquire and also support the hospital authorities by arranging medicines.
Shri D Ayyappan, Secretary CPI(M) along with the State Secretariat Member Com. B Chandrachoodan had also visited the hospital and informed that the exact reason for the sudden illness is yet to be known. All the children remain out of danger, they observed.
Meanwhile, the National Students Union of India, State President, Shri. M.A Sajid has marked a letter to the Hon'ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands requesting him to initiate a fully-fledged inquiry over the incident. A copy of the letter was also submitted to the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration and Secretary (Education).
