Students show keen interest in the lively session conducted by the Range Officer

Sita Nagar, Sept. 27: With an aim to sensitize the students of rural area about the unique bio-diversity of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Forest department conducted an awareness programme at Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sita Nagar, Diglipur today. Speaking on the rich bio-diversity of the Islands, the Range Officer Shri LJM Lobo said that the bio-diversity is unique in the world and it’s the duty of every Islander to protect and preserve it. Showing the video clips of the precious local flora and fauna, he described the importance of each species in maintaining the balance of the fragile eco-system. He said it’s very unfortunate that few greedy and selfish people, without knowing the consequences, tend to kill these rare species, thus making them extinct.

Calling upon the students to disseminate the message of wild life conservation in their locality Shri Lobo said that the natural beauty and the rich bio-diversity has earned goodwill for the Islands in the world and it’s the responsibility of each Islander to preserve it.

Responding to the queries raised by the students, he said there are many laws related to wildlife protection in different schedules, having provisions of strict punishment with heavy penalty. He asked the students to explain these laws to the people of their villages and advise them to stay away from committing illegal offences related to wildlife.

Expressing his gratitude to the visiting team for conducting such programme on a very important topic, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, CRC Incharge requested the department to conduct more such sessions involving the students of other classes also.

The awareness session was very lively and useful as it was reflected from the queries raised by the students. It was a participative session in which the students took part with great enthusiasm and interest. Around 100 students participated in this programme.
