Port Blair, Oct. 3: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Andaman & Nicobar State has organized a Seminar on “Workers’ Struggles in A & N Islands” today (3.10.2022) at Port Blair on the occasion of International Action Day being observed world over at the call of World Federation of Trade Unions. The day is observed internationally by the trade unions to remind the working class to strengthen and to escalate the struggles of workers on their demands.
Speaking on the occasion, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU A & N State Committee said that the workers all over the world are faced with difficulties, fear and uncertainty about their job. Working class is going through the poverty, wars, refugees, pandemic, etc. while the corporate all over the world are making huge profits. He accused the Modi government of trying to weaken the collective bargaining power of the workers.
Addressing the gathering, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee said that the WFTU was founded on 3rd October 1945 and as such 3rd October is observed as International Action Day all over the world. He cautioned the working class in the islands to be vigilant against the ruling classes of dividing the unity of the workers. He said that whatever the employees and workers achieved in these islands were only through the struggles conducted by the unions. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the unions to be able to conduct more and more movements in the coming days.
Shri R. Surendran Pillai, President CITU State Committee presided on the occasion and called upon the working class in the islands to remain united to fight against the anti-working class policies of the central government. Shri SP Kalairajan, General Secretary, ASNVMS proposed vote of thanks. A large number of workers from different Unions at Port Blaire town attended the meeting.
