Port Blair, Oct. 21: The ‘Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day’ was observed today at Community Hall, Ward No. 14, Dairy Farm. Dr. Anil Aggarwal, Mission Director (UTHM), A&N Administration was the chief guest while Dr. Munni Singhania, Director of Health Services was the guest of honor on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, the chief guest emphasized about Iodine Deficiency Disorders and stated that Iodine Deficiency is not a disease, it is a deficiency which is preventable and also it’s not just about Goitre, it can lead to cretinism, poor mental health and even miscarriage. He also highlighted about the sources of iodine and importance of consuming iodized salt.

In her key note address, Dr. Suja Antony, Deputy Director (Family Welfare) spoke about the causes, signs and symptoms of iodine deficiency disorders and its prevention.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Surendra Prahladka, President, ACCI emphasized on importance of Iodized salt for pregnant and lactating mothers, adolescent age group and appreciated the efforts of Directorate of Health in popularizing the usage of Iodised Salt.  Shri Ravi Chandran, Councillor, Ward No. 14, Dairy Farm expressed his gratitude to Directorate of Health Services for conducting the state level programme in the area.

The Anganwadi Workers presented a welcome song and a skit on the importance of using Iodised Salt. An exhibition on ‘Sources of Iodine Rich Foods’ was displayed at the venue. The programme was attended by senior Officials of the Health Department and over 100 people of Dairy Farm area including children, pregnant women, lactating women, ANMs, Anganwadi Workers and ASHAs.

Earlier, Dr. Shalini Lall, Technical Officer, NIDDCP welcomed the gathering while Smti. Vasantha Devi, HEO, In-charge, DD (FW) proposed the vote of thanks.
