Speakers Highlight Contribution of Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Freedom Struggle of India
Port Blair, Oct. 21: As part of week- long activities to commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of Provisional Govt. of Azad Hind (PGI) from Oct.17 to 23, 2022, a programme was held today at the historic Andaman Club in which the eminent historian shighlighted the immense contribution of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the Freedom struggle. Terming Subhash Chandra Bose as a great son of mother India, the speakers remarked that he was widely regarded as the most powerful freedom fighter, who played a pivotal role in instilling the feeling of patriotism and motivating the Indian masses towards attaining freedom. The programme was organized by the Department of Art & Culture as part of commemoration of Anniversary of the establishment of Provisional Govt. of Azad Hind (PGI).
Eminent historian, Shri Gauri Shankar Pandey while speaking on occasion highlighted the significance of A&N Islands in India’s freedom movement. He narrated the historical importance of Viper Island & Cellular Jail where freedom fighters were imprisoned. Shri Gauri Shankar also enlightened the gathering about the visit of Netaji to A&N Islands and the hoisting of the National Flag on Dec. 30, 1943, declaring A&N Islands,first Indian Territory to be liberated from the clutches of the British rulers.
In his address, Shri Mukeshwar Lal eminent historian and owner of Kalapani Museum spoke about the history of freedom struggle with special reference to A&N Islands. He also mentioned about the great escape of Netaji, establishment of Provisional govt. of free Indiaand Netaji’s visit to A&N Islands as the Supreme Commander of Provisional Govt. of Azad Hind.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary, Art & Culture, Shri Hari Kallikkat, IAS stated that the younger generation should draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the great freedom fighters who fought for liberating the country from the shackles of Britishers. He said that 6 surviving members of INA/IIL members were felicitated today by visiting their homes. He further informed that Art & Culture Department will document the oral history of A&N Islands from INA/IIL members for future reference. This, he said will help the future generation to know more about the history of A&N Islands.
The Secretary and the eminent historians jointly gave away the prizes to the winners of various competitions organized to commemorate Anniversary of the establishment of Provisional Govt. of Azad Hind (PGI).
The INA songs presented by the ‘Teachers Choir’ of Education Department filled the air with patriotism.
Earlier, the Assistant Director, Art & Culture, Dr. Rashida Iqbal welcomed the gathering and informed about the significance of the day.
