Port Blair, Dec. 4: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, in association with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Andaman & Nicobar Islands organised Two Day Capacity Building Workshop on “Climate Change in Sustainable Development for School Teachers” from 1st to 2nd December 2022. The valedictory function for the seminar was held on 02nd December 2022 in seminar room, JNRM wherein Shri.Abhishek Bhukal, DANICS, Director (Education), Andaman & Nicobar Administration graced the occasion as Chief Guest.  

Addressing the gathering Shri. Abhishek Bhukal appreciated the Department of Home Science for taking initiative to organise this programme and suggested to organise such workshops for the inter-island teachers also. He pointed out that the equilibrium should be maintained between the environment and development as we have been equipped with the various technological intervention to ease our job and fail to recognise the byproducts and emissions through them. 

The pattern of climate is changing which is affecting the agriculture and allied sectors for which establishment of watch groups with institutional capacities to carry out research is required, he said.  The Guest of Honour Shri S Bhuvarahan, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, Port Blair spoke on the methods of mitigation and adaptation of climate change in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. To create awareness to the local corners of Andaman the implementing agencies should locate the vulnerable areas and through scientific intervention that need to be addressed, he told. 

Shri S Bhuvarahan said that the people should be encouraged to use the substitute for petrol with renewable energy sources. The innovation and creativity should be imbibed and encouraged by the teachers’ community to the students. Formation of knowledge networks by JNRM among the existing knowledge institutions relating to climate science will facilitate suitable policy framework, he opined.

Dr. H.K. Sharma, Principal, JNRM encouraged the research in the areas of climate change since this will give impact on important socio-economic sectors like agriculture, health, natural ecosystem, bio-diversity, coastal zones, etc.

Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science and Convener of the programme suggested to provide an improved understanding and awareness and its associated consequences to students through the teachers by linking of traditional and formal knowledge systems through strategic mechanism for the sustainability of environment.

Earlier Smt. Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor of Home Science welcomed the gathering. Smt.Poonam Ajay Singh, Resource Person, Department of Home Science moderated the entire programme and Ms. P.Bhuvaneshwari, Resource Person were served as Rapporteur. Altogether 80 participants viz. teachers from various schools, students and faculty members of JNRM took part in the workshop.

Jayakumara Varadan, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI spoke on Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture Systems, Shri. A. Gopal, Project Officer, CPREEC spoke on Climate Change effect on Mangrove Ecosystem in ANI, Dr. K. Venkatesan, HoD, Home Science spoke on Policy Framework on Climate Change, International Protocols and Action Plan. Dr. Kandimuthu, Assistant Professor in Economics, JNRM spoke on Energy Economics, Energy Audit and Climate Change. Dr. Santosh Kumar Jha, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of Botany, JNRM spoke on Climate Change Knowledge and Education through NEP. Mr. Denis Giles, Editor-in-Chief, Andaman Chronicle spoke on Role of Media in Sensitizing Climate Change. Dr. Vivek Kumar Sahu. Assistant Professor, Deptt. of Zoology, JNRM spoke on Climate Change and Biodiversity. Dr. S. Balaji, Professor, Deptt. of Coastal Disaster Management, Pondicherry University (Brookshabad Campus) spoke on Climate Change impact on Disaster and its Management.
