Port Blair, Dec. 23: The National Consumer Day will be observed tomorrow (Dec.24) in these Islands along with rest of the country. As part of the weeklong celebration, the Department of CS & CA, A & N Administration has conducted various programmes to create awareness on Consumer Protection Act, 2019 amongst the consumers of these Islands.

This year, the Government of India has adopted a theme ‘Effective disposal of cases in Consumer Commission’. The Government will hold dedicated Lok Adalats to take up these pending cases and coordinate with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for the disposal of pending consumer cases and efforts will be made to resolve them quickly. The process of registering complaints electronically through E-Daakhil portal (www.edaakhil.nic.in) was successfully launched in the UT of A & N Islands on 28th October, 2020 and till date around 46 cases have been filed through this portal. 

Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, consumers can file complaints against any defect in goods purchased or deficiencies in any services availed including any unfair/restrictive trade practices adopted, through specialized quasi-judicial agencies. The Consumer Commission render to simple, inexpensive and speedy adjudication of consumer complaints. 

The Administration has provided the option of end-to-end service delivery to the people of these Islands enabling to file their grievances through online platform i.e. e-file their complaints and grievances for prompt redressal without physical appearance at their doorsteps.

Meanwhile, the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, A & N Administration will be organizing a seminar tomorrow (Dec.24) at 11 am in the ALHW Multipurpose Hall, Port Blair to enlighten the consumers of their legitimate rights as a consumer. All have been requested to participate to enhance knowledge about the rights of consumers.
