Port Blair, Feb 14: The Department of Disaster Management has been regularly conducting various disaster preparedness programmes in different departments and institutions of this UT under the guidance of Director (Disaster Management), Dr. Nitin Shakya. In continuation of this, the Department organized a sensitization programme for the students of 2nd Year (MBBS) of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) on Disaster Management & Preparedness at Directorate of Disaster Management today.

The Assistant Director (Ops.), DDM Shri T.K.S. Ajayan interacted with the students and briefed about the various types of disasters and vulnerability profile of this UT. Islands which are highly susceptible to disasters of varied intensities, though we cannot prevent this natural phenomenon but definitely with a holistic and a meticulous approach & plan, we could mitigate the impact. The Sr. Consultant, DDM, Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas elaborated various preparedness mechanisms of community as well as institutions to respond by themselves during emergencies or crisis and functions of Disaster Management and State Emergency Operation Centre of this UT.

The Assistant Director (Log.), DDM, Shri. Gyan Singh explained the different aspects of disaster management viz. response, preparedness and mitigation strategies and also highlighted the basic Do’s and Don’ts used in any eventuality and the role and responsibility of paramedics during the time of disaster.
