Port Blair, Feb 15: The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are prone to Geological and Hydro-meteorological disasters and located in one of the most seismically active parts of the world and several great earthquakes have occurred in the past.   The devastating earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004 caused horizontal and vertical movement of land mass in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and generated ‘Tsunami killer waves’ in which, many lives were lost besides loss of properties.

The Director (Disaster Management), Dr. Nitin Shakya, has urged the general public of A&N Islands to adhere to Do’s & Don’ts of Tsunami. The Directorate of Disaster Management in order to create awareness among general public issues Do’s & Don’ts of various disasters from time to time to save people during any eventuality.

To mitigate the tsunami threat and strengthen preparedness level of the community, people should prepare emergency kits (copies of documents, torch, radio, medicines, dry foods, water, etc.), identify danger zone, safe evacuation routes, safe shelter, listen to radio, TV & other media for alert, warnings & advice. If you are in coastal/tsunami vulnerable area, move to higher ground in case of tsunami alert/warning issued and return after only when Govt. official inform you it is safe.
