Port Blair, March 5: Highlighting the serious issue of indiscriminate power cuts in Port Blair and surrounding areas of South Andaman region, the Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands to intervene in this matter and direct the electricity department to ensure that power production through powerhouses of the Electricity Department and independent power producers is more than the required demands all the time, especially during exam times and also during February to May, when the power requirement increases due to hot weather conditions.

In his letter he pointed out that the electricity department of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has recently announced nearly an hour long rotational load shedding for Port Blair and the South Andaman region.

He added that he has been receiving numerous complaints from residents in the area that there are more than 8 to 9 unscheduled power cuts in the day besides the rotational power cuts, causing a great deal of inconvenience to islanders.

The Member of Parliament mentioned that the situation is especially concerning given that students are currently writing their exams. While students of Class X and Class XII are writing board exams, several schools are conducting their annual exams and the indiscriminate power cuts have caused a great deal of misery for students, particularly those from families who cannot afford an inverter or any other resources, he added.

He said that additionally, there is a need to repair those DG sets that have technical issues and install at least 10 MW of standby power generators to prevent power cuts.
