Port Blair, March 16: The Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to remove all abandoned/discarded vessels from the Phoenix Bay jetty area.

In a letter addressed to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament mentioned that the abandoned vessels in the Phoenix Bay Jetty area have not only become a source of sea pollution but also an eyesore for the local residents and tourists.

He added that Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a popular tourism destination, and many tourists travel by the marine foreshore route to enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. While visiting Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, a lot of tourists visit the Phoenix Bay jetty area while a large number of Islanders also use the Jetty complex to visit various Islands.

He pointed out that the presence of these old vessels has marred the natural beauty of the region, obstructing the scenic views and causing a visual discomfort to visitors.

The Member of Parliament requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor to take action to remove these abandoned vessels from the area.

He added that doing so will bring multiple benefits for the administration and the area. Firstly, it will help in making the area more attractive for tourists, allowing them to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region without any obstruction.

Secondly, he said that it will reduce the pollution caused by these discarded vessels, safeguarding the marine environment and protecting the health and well-being of the local community.

Lastly, the Member of Parliament mentioned that scrapping these vessels will generate revenue for the administration, which can be used for other developmental works in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
