Port Blair, March 17: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, NSS Units No.2 & 4 in association with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India organised One Day Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention for College Students in JNRM on 17th March 2023.

During the inauguration the Chief Guest Smt. S. Selvi, Chairperson, PBMC urged the students to keep themselves away from drugs and help others to say No to drugs. SmtSelvi has described the role of students in nation building and Andaman development. The youngsters should tune themselves to channelize their energy and become torch bearers to eradicate this evil menace, she said.

Dr. O. Muthiah, Professor & Head / Dean, School of Tamil, Indian Languages and Rural Arts, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram observed that one or two decades ago such kind of programmes were organised for the benefit of rural masses since alcohol usage was rampant. But these days due to the narcotic and synthetic drugs our modus operandi have been changed from rural areas to urban youths and awareness programme organised for the drug abuse prevention. Dr O Muthiah described the ill effects and further created an awareness through folk song.

Dr. H. K. Sharma, Principal, JNRM, informed the gathering that in our college we are working towards drug free institute and zero tolerance towards drugs.

Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science and Convener of the programme spoke on Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Dr. Santosh Kumar Jha, Assistant Professor and Co-Convener handled the technical session on various types of synthetic and narcotic drugs and role of NSS Volunteers in educating the society. This was followed by Dr Mitesh Behari, Psychiatrist throwing light on the need for proper psychiatric care during rehabilitation.

Dr. Rekha Kumari, Resource Person, Department of Home Science proposed vote of thanks. Smt. Poonam Ajay Singh, Resource Person, Department of Home Science moderated the programme. Altogether 100 students took part in the programme.
