I am pleased to learn that we will be observing the International Day of Forests on March 21, 2023, along with rest of the world. This day is meant to raise public awareness about the value of forests and their relationship with health, which is the United Nations' chosen theme "Forests and Health" for the year 2023.

Human life has been significantly reliant on forests since the dawn of civilization. They improve our well-being, clean the air, produce food, purify water and combat climate change by capturing carbon. Forests also provide us with a wide range of intangible advantages. They are the habitat of a vast array of species and are essential for the survival of numerous tribes. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands Forests have made a significant contribution in these areas.

Forests and health are closely related. Forests not only provide a variety of therapeutic plants and herbs but also serve as a reliable source of pure, wholesome water. We are grateful that mother earth has bestowed our Islands with lush woods, which are home to numerous endemic plants used by our indigenous tribes and traditional medical practices for the well-being of the islanders. It is our exalted duty to safeguard and maintain our forests for the sake of future generations.

On the occasion of the International Day of Forests, I appeal to the people of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to complement the efforts of administration to safeguard and conserve our valuable forest resources so that our future generations can live healthy lives.
