Port Blair, June 28: Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, it is the duty of every person having care or charge of any animal to take all reasonable measures to ensure the wellbeing of such animals and to prevent infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering. The same rule provides for establishment and regulation of societies for prevention of cruelty to animals in every district of the UT/State and such society will be called the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (District SPCA). The main function of the Society is to provide assistance to the Govt., Animal Welfare Board and Local Authorities in carrying out and implementing the provision of the Act. The DSPCAs were established in all the 3 districts of the UT which was notified on 23/11/2017.

The Societies are now being renewed and the Managing Committee will be re-constituted. All interested persons who wish to work for the welfare of the animals and contribute to the stray animal control have been requested to become a member of the DSPCA of their respective district. The subscription rate is Rs. 1000/- for lifetime membership. Interested person may apply for membership of their respective district to the General Secretary of the respective DSPCA, Deputy Commissioner Office or contact the Zonal Veterinary Officer of the district for assistance. This special membership drive will continue till 30th July, 2023.
