Port Blair, July 2: The Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration to review the allotment of vacant Government Quarters and construct new triple-story government quarters in the place of old/unoccupied government quarters so that more and more government servants in need of government accommodation can get quarters allotted in their names.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Member of Parliament said that a large number of government servants posted in the Port Blair region are currently awaiting government accommodation. Due to the non-availability of sufficient quarters, these government servants are compelled to rent private accommodations at high monthly rates. In many cases, the rental expenses surpass the allotted House Allowance, placing a heavy financial burden on these government servants, he added.

He mentioned that as per his information, several government quarters located in the New Pahargaon area of Port Blair city remain unoccupied for an extended period, dating back almost two to three years.

“Additionally, there are several old and dilapidated Type IV & Type V government quarters, which remain unoccupied for several years. This situation has worsened with the increasing demand for government quarters in the region,” he added.

In light of the aforementioned circumstances, the Member of Parliament requested the Chief Secretary to conduct a thorough review of the vacant government quarters and prioritize their allocation to the government servants who are waiting for suitable accommodation.

Moreover, he proposed that the vacant land on which the underutilized old Type IV & Type V quarters are situated be utilized by dismantling the old quarters and constructing new reinforced concrete (RCC) government quarters with a triple-story design.

He pointed out that this approach would maximize the efficient utilization of space and significantly increase the number of quarters available to government servants. Instead of a single quarter, at least six quarters could be made available simultaneously, benefiting a larger number of government servants.
