Port Blair, July 23: As part of disaster preparedness, the Directorate of Shipping Services conducted a mock drill on fire in the premises of Marine Dockyard on July 22, 2023. This mock drill was conducted in coordination with the Fire Services, A&N Administration, Port Blair. In the mock drill, the scenario of major Fire at 70 KL Fuel tank was replicated.  

Immediately on activation of Fire Alarm by POL inside the Marine Dockyard, all personnel’s following the Standard Operating Procedure, vacated their respective place of work and through the prescribed escape route reached to the predetermined Safe point at near Fitting Shop II. The Disaster management team of Directorate of shipping services team immediately started boundary cooling and also started fighting fire with available portable fire Extinguisher. Fire Tender from Marine Dockyard Fire station reach the site and started fighting the fire with Foam system and the fire was brought under control, precautionary boundary cooling continued.

A real time demonstration was carried out on use of different kind fire extinguisher was carried out with the participation of employees of this directorate.

Simultaneously all operational boats berthed at Cholunga Wharf moved to sea. Altogether 193 personnel’s including employees of DSS, and staff of private contractors working inside the marine dockyard, participated in the mock drill.  Eventually, at the end of the session a combined briefing was undertaken by Nodal Officer, Disaster Management, DSS and Technical Superintendent DSS.
