Model School Sitanagar, Diglipur and Subhash Gram teams emerge winners

Diglipur, Aug 5: The Inter school football tournament involving all the schools of the zone, concluded at Diglipur on 5th Aug 2023. In the Boys under 14 category finals played today at the Vivekanand Stadium, Govt. Model Senior Secondary School Sitanagar defeated Govt. Secondary School Pashchim Sagar by 4-0. Bishal Das and Yashwant Ram scored 2 goals each for the winning team and helped their team become the winner of the tournament of the category.

In the senior category of under 17 Boys, the GSSS Subhas gram won the final against GSSS Kishorinagar by 6-0. The Subhash gram boys dominated the match right from the beginning and the opposite team could not come out of the pressure and lost.

In the Girls under 17 Final, the Girls of GSSS Diglipur defeated GSS Nabagram by 2-1, in an interesting match. Total 22 schools in ‘Under 14 Category’ and 16 teams in the ‘Under 17 Category’ each in boys and Girls, participated in this first ever mega zonal school sporting event held after the Corona Pandemic period.

The Chief Guest of the event, the Pradhan of Subhash Gram Panchayat, Shri P.R Singaram, Special Guests, Zilla Parishad Member, Shri Pradeep Das, Panchayat Samiti Member, Shri Madhai Murshid and the Deputy Education officer Shri S. Suresh Kumar gave away trophies to the winning teams. Expressing his happiness over the conduct of the event, the chief guest hoped that many such sporting events would be conducted along with ensuring the smooth academic practices in the schools.  

Addressing the budding players, the DEO Shri Suresh Kumar said that discipline is the most important attribute the student should have to be successful in life and sports inculcate this value. A disciplined life is the key to success, he said.

Talking to Andaman Chronicle after the match, the PRI representative of Panchayat Samiti, Shri Madav Murshid said that football has been the most popular game in Dilgipur but now-a-days the smart phone has taken control of the priorities it seems. Students are reluctant to spend time on the play field. He was of the opinion that the youth, specially school students should spend some time on the nearby accessible playground of any school. Adopting regular sporting activities in their habit would help them to excel in the academics also, in many ways. Shri Madhai expressed his concern on the increasing drug menace in the Islands and expected that the schools, parents and the society at large should seriously take note of this deadly drug issue and fight unitedly.   

The three winning teams will now represent Diglipur Zone in their respective categories at the State Level Tournament to be held in the last week of this month at Port Blair, where all the other teams from the other eight Educational Zones will join to showcase the talents of their young players. All the teams are anxiously waiting for this big schooling football event to get started, as it’s going to be a selection trail for the team to be constituted for the National Subroto Cup Football Championship from these Islands.
