Port Blair, Aug 7: Shri Vishal Jolly, National Executive Member BJP & Former State President BJP-ANI wrote a letter to the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah for awarding adequate Compensation to the victims whose lands were submerged in sea during TSUNAMI

In his letter Shri Jolly highlighted following plight of victims whose recorded lands were submerged under sea water due to the devastating effect of Tsunami that struck these Islands on 26th December, 2004.

Large chunk of lands was submerged under sea water during Tsunami and the same continues to remain submerged till date.

Previously during the UPA Government's regime, a sum of Rs. 9.35 lakhs per hectare was announced & awarded as compensation to the effected farmers/recorded tenants of those submerged lands and those lands have also been resumed by the then government.

As the amount was absolutely meager and much below the then prevailing market rate, therefore there were protests and agitations against the same and most of the victims refused to accept the same.

Thereafter during the visit of our Former National President, Shri Rajnath Singh, large number of protesters of those affected areas met him and an assurance was given that the compensation would be enhanced adequately and a committee to make appropriate assessment would be formed in this regard.

Thereafter acting in terms of the promise, Vivek Rae Committee was constituted and the assessment was made by visiting the affected areas and also after hearing the victims/effected farmers.

Reportedly, a sum of Rs. 36.75 lakhs per hectare of compensation has been assessed by the said Committee and his report to that effect has been submitted to your good office.

The effected recorded tenants/ farmers have been suffering badly due to this situation since past around 18 plus years without any relief.

These people are neither allowed to use their own recorded lands nor can they sell or dispose of the same.

Accordingly, Jolly requested the Hon’ble Union Home Minister that all these effected victims may kindly be disbursed with the best suitable compensation by taking aid of the report submitted by the Vivek Rae Committee.
