Port Blair, Aug 21: The Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration to replace MV Galathia, which is being operated between Katchal and Kamorta, with a better ferry.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Member of Parliament mentioned that he has been informed by the public of Katchal Island that MV Galathia Ferry, which is over four-decade old is currently in a state of disrepair and rust.

He said that this alarming situation not only affects the efficiency of transportation but also poses a significant threat to the lives of the local inhabitants who rely on this ferry service for their daily commuting needs.

He pointed out that the visible rust and corrosion on the vessel's structure are indicative of its poor condition. In addition to this, the ferry's speed has been considerably compromised, causing inconvenience to passengers who depend on it for timely travel.

The MP also mentioned that the ferry lacks even the most basic amenities that are considered essential for passenger comfort. The absence of comfortable seating arrangements, clean facilities and adequate hygiene measures further compounds the challenges faced by the passengers during their journeys.

Considering the vital role of the MV Galathia Ferry, which connects Nancowry and Katchal Islands, the Member of Parliament requested the Chief Secretary to replace the ferry, which is crucial to ensure the safety of the local population and to provide them with a reliable and efficient means of transportation.
