Enthusiasm Among the Youth for Sports Lauded

Diglipur, Aug 30: The heavy rain overnight in the North Andaman region did pose challenges to the organizers at Diglipur, in the morning to conduct sports’ activities to join the Nation in the celebration of National Sports Day.  But the rains could not lower their enthusiasm.

The Subhash Gram Panchayat’s organizing team under the leadership of Pradhan Shri P.R. Singaram had ensured all the preparations were ready and the sportsmen too were eagerly waiting for the downpour to stop for a while at least. The sports lovers in and around Diglipur area came out of their homes in the morning around 5.30 AM when the rain stopped and the marathon got started by the chief guest, the Deputy Education Officer, Shri S. Suresh Kumar.

The long race for the boys was of 5 Kms distance, covering Subhash Gram, Vidya Sagar Palli, Desh Bandhu Gram and Madhupur villages. For the girls the challenge was to run 3 Kms.

The people standing alongside the road were cheering up the enthusiastic runners, especially girls who despite the bad weather were seen full of energy, determined to achieve the target.

Sujit Das emerged as the winner of the race, securing first place in the Men’s category. Prabhu Bepari bagged the second prize, reaching second, whereas Karthic won the prize, being third.

In the Girls’ category, Seema Mondal was given warm reception when she reached the finishing point first. Tamanna Barick was the second and Payal Das was the third among the 32 girls achieving the milestone.

Later while felicitating the winners in the prize distribution ceremony at the Panchayat Hall of Subhashgram, the chief guest, the Deputy Education officer Shri S. Suresh Kumar said the zeal and dedication with which the organisers conducted the event, in spite of bad weather and other constraints is commendable.

The Pradhan of the Panchayat Shri P.R. Singaram congratulated the winners and had special words for the other participants, saying that the courage and love for the sports shown by them amidst bad weather is worth emulation.

The Zila Parishad Member Shri Pradip Das said that, to boost the sports activities in the region, the Zila Parishad and other Panchayati Raj Institutions are working on defined plans and it would be seen on ground in the near future soon. The Panchayat Representative Shri Waseem Akram spoke about the achievements of the legendary Major Dhyanchand, whose birthday is celebrated as the National Sports Day.

The First three rank holders were awarded with the cheques of Rs 3000, Rs 2000, and Rs 1000 respectively in both categories of Boys and Girls.

The Block Sports officer Shri S. Varahavataram informed that more than 56 competitors took part in the event and they had arrived at the starting point before 5 AM. The interest among the youth gives hope, he said.

Later when the water logging got subsidized, a volleyball match for the girls was conducted by the Nehru Yuva Kendra at the Vivekanand stadium, in which Diglipur challengers defeated Diglipur Strikers. The coordinator Shri Sukhranjan Biswas informed that the girl sportswomen from the different villages of Diglipur turned up for the match from the early morning.
