Port Blair, Sept. 10: The District Legal Services Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands held National Lok Adalats in the District Court Building, Port Blair, ADR centre - ‘PRAYAS’, Port Blair and Sub-Divisional Court Complex at Mayabunder and Diglipur today. The Judicial Officers of this judgeship were present to mark the commencement of the National Lok Adalat at Port Blair, Mayabunder and Diglipur. Out of the total 1470 pre-litigation cases including 1113 pre-litigation BSNL recovery cases and 49 cases pending in different courts at Port Blair were referred to the National Lok Adalat, out of which, 124 pre-litigation bank recovery cases were disposed of by the National Lok Adalat at Port Blair. Disposing of 124 bank recovery cases, the involved amount of Rs. 2,13,37,759/- have been settled at Rs. 1,35,23,100/-, thus paving a benefit of 78,14,659/- to the bank loan borrowers.  A sum of Rs.6,13,500/- was realized on the spot. Disposing of 239 Criminal cases, a sum of Rs. 12,450/- was realized as fine.

At Port Blair, a case involving a widow was mutually agreed upon and settled with the bank relieving the widow from court proceedings. Another matter involving a lady and movers and packers was disposed and the petitioner was well compensated. Moreover, a good number of cases involving BSNL were disposed thus paving big relief to the customers.

In Mayabunder, one bench was constituted and 156 pre-litigation cases including 140 pre-litigation BSNL recovery cases were referred, out of which, 15 pre-litigation cases were disposed of and settled at Rs. 1,28,994/. A sum of Rs. 16,994/- was realized on the spot. 50 cases pending in different courts were taken up, out of which, 20 criminal compoundable cases were disposed of and a fine amount of Rs. 49650/- was realized. In Diglipur, one bench was constituted and 150 pre-litigation cases were referred, out of which, 13 pre-litigation cases were disposed of and settled at Rs. 71,538/- and the same amount was realized on the spot. 189 cases pending in different courts were taken up, out of which, 40 criminal compoundable cases were disposed of and a fine amount of Rs. 55,300/- was realized.

The District Legal Services Authority has constituted five benches at Port Blair, one Bench at Mayabunder and one bench at Diglipur.  The Benches at Port Blair were presided over by Shri Bhawani Shanker Sharma, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Port Blair, Md. Mohammed Sheheer, Advocate, Ms. Ruksar Rahim, Advocate and Shri. Mohammed Sharukh, Advocate, Shri. K. Vijay Kumar, Social Entrepreneur, Smti. Maria Sheela, Social Worker, Smti. Anuradha Lall, Social Worker, Shri. P. Mujib Rehman, Social Worker and Shri. Sujit Thankachen, Social Worker (Chairman, CWC). The bench at Mayabunder was presided over by Md. Rafique Alam, Chief Judicial Magistrate, N&M Andaman, Mayabunder sitting with Smti Banani Biswas, Advocate and Smti. G. Sandhya, Legal Advisor-cum-Probation Officer, District Child Protection Unit, N&M Andaman, Mayabunder. The bench at Diglipur was presided over by Shri Arnab Roy Chowdhury, Judicial Magistrate First Class, N&M Andaman, Mayabunder sitting with Shri Biswajit Mondal, Advocate and Shri. Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Head Master (Retired).
