Mayabunder, Oct. 11: ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ was celebrated by District Child Protection Unit, Office of the Deputy Commissioner, N&MA District at Forest Labour (Welfare) Club, Mayabunder in which students from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Mayabunder, ICDS functionaries and team of DCPU, N&MA participated. Shri Ankit Yadav, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, N&M Andaman was the chief guest on the occasion while Shri Subhajit Basu, Hon’ble Additional District & Session Judge, N&MA, Mayabunder was the guest of honour. Shri Ashish Joon, Assistant Commissioner (HQ) Mayabunder, Dr. P.K.Palit, Medical Officer (i/c) R.P Hospital, Mayabunder and Smt. Anima Sammadar, Head Mistress, Govt. Primary School, Mayabunder were the special guests.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest highlighted on the importance of the theme ‘International Girl Child Day- 2023’ i.e. ‘Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being’. The guest of honour briefed about importance of International Day of the Girl Child. Speakers highlighted on various issues like Child Rights, Health Care & Hygiene, Importance of Education for every Girl Child, Child Marriage & Beti Bachao Beti Padhao etc.

The celebration of ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ aims to focus on importance of girl's education, their rights and promoting gender equality. This day is also designated to eliminate gender based challenges that little girls face around the world including child marriage, proper learning opportunities, various kinds of violence and discrimination.

The celebration of ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ commenced with a rally by the students from GMSSS, Mayabunder from their school to Forest Labour (Welfare) Club, Mayabunder with the slogans of gender equality, empowerment of girl children etc. During the programme, various competitions viz. spoon race, save the balloon, fancy dress and drawing were conducted for girl students.

Altogether 200 students participated in the programme and prizes were distributed to the winners. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Legal-cum-Probation Officer, District Child Protection Unit, N&MA.
