Port Blair, May 12: The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Shri. Arjun Sharma, IAS along with engineering wing of APWD/PRIs and elected representatives conducted extensive exploration for augmentation of more water resources to meet the challenge of scarcity of water during summer seasons in South Andaman District.

The Deputy Commissioner explored various villages and issued directions to engineering wing to carry out the de-silting of Jinga Nallah at Mile Tilak.

The proposal for construction of Dam at Manjeri was explored which could be utilised for continuous supply of clean water to the residents of Ferrargunj and Port Blair. The ongoing water Project at Guptapara was inspected and directions were issued for de-silting the catchment area for more quantity of fresh water. The EE, PHED, APWD was directed to carry out the works on war footing on the projects which includes Vasundara Dam and all check weirs within Nayashahar, Dhanikhari, Manglutang, Guptapara & Manjeri villages. The Vasundara Check Weir shall be de-silted by the use of excavators. The EE PHED, APWD was directed to carry out the works within 2 (two) days.

The project at Bada Nallah is nearing completion and once functional it will connect with the village of Brindaban, Namunaghar and Mithakhari to provide clean water within these villages.

The abandoned Water pump at Mathura village was explored and a meeting has been fixed with the PRIs, APWD and Revenue Administration to resolve the issue.

The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman directed that the proposed Pond at Chouldari requires immediate cleaning and the Tehsildar, Ferrargunj has been directed to explore an area of suitable land for setting up a water Pump.

Instructions were given to APWD to develop the Check weir at Rubber Board Plantation with proper planning and further to issue water through Tankers to the residents of Hobdypur, Tushnabad and Ograbranj.

The Check weir and Ring well at Manarghat shall be immediately instated for use in providing clean water to the residents.

The Bore well situated at the Bus Terminus Bambooflat shall be made into operation. Necessary unfinished works shall be initiated without fail

During the inspection of Sona Pahad Check weir dam it was suggested that the catchment area should be widened constructed to cover larger area so that rainwater could be stored. The extension of the area of the Check weir will supply continuous water during the dry season.

The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman directed the EE APWD to make arrangements for continuous supply of water through trucks till an alternative arrangement is made available at the areas of Mithakhari and Tushnabad where villagers are getting water after 7 days.

Directions were also issued to the EE APWD & EE PHED to construct overhead Tanks wherever necessary so that proper water distribution through gravity is made easy.

The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman directed the engineering wing that there should be more ponds /Check weirs constructed at areas with water scarcity and to ensure that all the ponds are cleaned and maintained in good condition so that rainwater could be stored and used by the public. Further instructions were issued for replacement of the damaged pipelines at Manglutan, Guptapara and Manjeri villages immediately.
