Port Blair, May 15: The Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has proposed to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to appoint three Nominated Members in South Andaman Zilla Parishad as well as N & M Andaman Zilla Parishad and reserve one seat for women.

In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament said that there is already a system in place of nominating three Nominated Councillors in the Port Blair Municipal Council. This initiative, he said, has undoubtedly contributed to enhancing management efficiency and effectively addressing public issues within the PBMC.

In this regard he suggested reservation of one seat for female candidates among the three Nominated Councillors. This step will not only provide women with a platform to actively participate in decision-making processes but also signify our collective dedication to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

Building upon the success of this initiative in the PBMC, he requested the Lt. Governor to implement a similar mechanism within the South Andaman Zilla Parishad as well as the North and Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad. He proposed the appointment of three Nominated Members to each Zilla Parishad, with one seat reserved for a female candidate.

“Such a provision would not only enhance governance efficiency and representation but also uphold our commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment at the grassroots level,” the MP added.
