Port Blair, May 21: The newly enacted laws will commence on 1st July 2024 and to ensure its effective implementation, the South Andaman District Police conducted a major 2-days awareness campaign for different segments of society.

Police officials of the South Andaman District have conducted awareness programs across various locations in South Andaman District. The areas of the district covered by the program are Haddo, Chatham, Junglighat, Beodnabad, Wimberlyganj, Lamba pahad, Ograbraj, Nimbu Bagicha, Fish Landing Center - Guptapara, Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Neil Kendra, Hutbay. The awareness campaigns were conducted by officers of the ranks of DSsP, Inspectors as well as other ranks of the police.

A total of 1000 members of the General Public, PRI members, Anganwadi Members, members of fishing community, women, Self Help Groups participated in these programs. During the events presentation was shown, banners were placed and pamphlets were distributed to educate the public about the newly enacted laws namely “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita” (BNS), “Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita” (BNSS) and “Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam” (BSA), which replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act respectively.

The changes from the old laws were highlighted, along with the key features of the new laws making them citizen-friendly, women and child centric, with greater emphasis on community participation, transparency and technologically driven.
