Port Blair, Aug 14: The installation ceremony of the Inner Wheel Club was held at Hotel Bay Island here today. The First Lady of the Islands, Smt Suneeti Singh was the chief guest and inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the First Lady appreciated the philanthropic activities carried out by the Club for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. She suggested that poor children be adopted by the club members for facilitating their studies, health care and other needs. The First Lady also handed over clothes and also financial assistance to the inmates of the Pranab Kanya Sangh. She also released a bulletin brought out by the Club on the occasion.

The programme was also graced by the Chairperson, SSWB, Smt Ratna Kannan, Secretary, Social Welfare, Shri KK Jindal and others.

Smt. Neeta Agarwal, Dr. Yasmin and Satinder Kaur were inducted as the President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively for the year 2013-14.

Conference on Role of Women In Panchayati Raj Institution Organised

Port Blair, Aug. 14: A conference on the subject “Role of Women in Panchayati Raj Institution” was organised by the Pradesh Mahila Congress at Patthargudda Community hall on 12th August, 2013. Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma graced the occasion as the chief guest.

In his inaugural address Sharma said that Secularism, Communal Harmony and Brotherhood are the main base of UPA Government and the Congress Party and all government policies and planning have been prepared accordingly. He said that it is the responsibility of the workers of the Party to go to everybody and make them fully aware the policies and planning of the UPA Government and ensure that these are being implemented at every corners.

Talking about the burning issues raised by many speakers such as bad roads, scarcity and unfiltered water etc.  Sharma said that the Party is trying its best to solve these problems with the help of the local Administration. Sharma also requested the Mahila Congress leaders to put more thrust on the issues of self employment of women by forming more and more Self Help Groups and Cooperative Society. He said that the safety of women and making them physically and mentally healthy should be one of the most important duties. He also stated that there should be separate buses for the transportation of working women and College girl students etc.

Sharma further informed the gathering that the Party has taken initiative with the Local Administration and at the Ministry level for opening of Medical College, Women’s college, another degree college and University in these islands. He said that the developments presently available in these islands are the efforts of the Congress Party alone.

He has also spoke on the issue of women empowerment. He has also recorded his appreciation towards the former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi who has given reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions.     

The other speakers remembered the former Prime Minister Smti  Indira Gandhi for her efforts of uplifting the women in all the fields. They recorded their faith on the dynamic leadership of Smti Sonia Gandhi, the UPA Chairperson with whose efforts India got her first Women President. They said that they are proud that the speaker of Loksabha is a lady where as at present these Islands are also having Smti Abala Samaddar as Adhyaksha Zilla Parishad and Smti Ratna Kannan, as Chairperson, SWB.

Shri Jag Narayan, RV Reddy, Manickam,  Ratna Kannan, Mariyam Bibi, RP Singh, Sanjay Meshak, Sanjiv Rangaiya, Neela Devi have also spoke on the occasion while Smti Shanta Singh, President, Mahila Congress proposed vote of thanks and talked about the women power.

Port Blair, Aug. 14: The socio –cultural organisation Chetana will be hosting a symposium and Cultural evening on 16th August for the differently abled children as part of the independence day celebration.

The Islands Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash will inaugurate the cultural evening – ‘Chalenge Saath Saath’ at Tagore Auditorium, Middle Point, Port Blair at 5 PM. The Chairperson of Andaman & Nicobar State Social Welfare Board, Ratna Kannan will preside over the programme, while Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President, Andaman State Cooperative Union will participate as a guest of honour.

The symposium on the topic ‘Disability – not a curse, but a Challenge’ will be held at JNRM College on 16th at 11 hours in the morning. Shri N K Sharma, Secretary for Cooperation will be the chief guest, while Dr Iqbal Ahmad, Principal, JNRM will preside over the Programme. Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President, Andaman State Cooperative Union will be the special guest on the occasion.

The programme is aimed at showcasing the talents of differently abled children in the islands. The Meritorious students among the differently abled will be honoured in the programme with cash awards along with certificates.

Port Blair, Aug. 14: PCC President, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma met Shri AK Chugh, Director, Social Welfare Board along with a delegation of widow and elderly persons today and briefed him about non receipt of their pension amount by the first week of every month. He requested the Director to ensure disbursement of pension amount by the first week of every month alike the salaries being paid to the Government employees.

Port Blair, Aug. 13: In order to maintain Aberdeen Bazaar market area free from Hawkers on Independence Day for smooth movement of general public, it is decided that this year also the Hawkers will he allowed to sell their product at ITF ground alone as during the Republic day - 2013. Only 2nd and 3rd circle of ITF ground will be allowed for selling of product on 15/8/2013 from morning 6.00 am, to evening 5.00 p.m. Hawkers will he allowed to occupy the space at ITF ground only from the evening of 14/8/2013 onwards. The representatives from PBMC will collect littering charges from the Hawkers as done previously.

The Directorate of Tourism, A & N Administration will not be responsible for any loss or damage to any materials belongings to the hawkers during the day. Display of materials which may cause discontent to any Community, Caste, Creed or Sex will not he allowed. Sale of any illegal items in the premises will not be at allowed and for any violation, the Hawkers will be purely responsible for legal ramification.

It is notified for the information of the General Public that the following Traffic arrangements/Traffic Closure have been made for the Cycle Rally organized by A & N Police on 16th August 2013 from Netaji Stadium to Corbyn’s Cove.

1. The Cycle Rally shall commence from Netaji Stadium to Corbyn’s Cove to be flagged off by the First Lady of the Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh.

2. The road leading from Netaji Stadium to Corbyn’s Cove (via) Girls School Junction, Ayyanar Temple, Sinclairs Bay View Junction and Science Centre, Mazar Pahad shall be closed for traffic from 06:00 AM to 08:30 AM.

3. The vehicles intending to proceed to Aberdeen Bazaar from R.K. Mission area shall be diverted towards Aberdeen Bazaar via RGT Road, Murugan Temple Junction and vice-versa.

4. The vehicles intending to proceed to Aberdeen Bazaar from Mazar Pahad area shall be diverted to Aberdeen Bazaar via Hawaghar junction Shadipur Junction and Murugan Temple Junction and vice-versa.

5. The vehicles intending to proceed to Aberdeen Bazaar from Corbyn’s Cove area shall be diverted to Aberdeen Bazaar either via Austinabad Junction or Chakkargaon Junction via Ramu’s house road and vice-versa.

6. The vehicles intending to proceed to South Point from Aberdeen Bazar shall be diverted towards Model SchoolCrossing — Bengali Club- Goalghar- Secretariat Junction-Police Line and Nayagaon.

7. No heavy vehicle including private and STS buses shall be allowed to proceed to Aberdeen Bazaar from Gandhi Statue and Bengali Club junction from 0600 hrs to 0900 hrs.

8. The vehicles intending to proceed to Aberdeen Bazaar from South Point shall follow the route of South Point, Shadipur, Nayagaon Junction, Police Line, RBV, Secretariat Junction arid Goalghar.

9. Heavy vehicles proceeding to long route shall be diverted to Goalghar and Junglighat from Bengali Club.

10. All the vehicular traffic shall remain suspended in all stretches of the road leading from Netaji Stadium to Corbyn’s Cove from 0600 hrs till completion of the function.

Port Blair, Aug. 13: The school going children of various schools in Havelock Island along with their parents have gone on strike for fulfilment of genuine demands like appointment of teachers, Vice Principal, Head Masters, improvement in infrastructure, science lab, water and sanitation etc. These have been demands of the parents for years but have not been resolved till date in spite of repeated requests made by the parents.

In the wake of the situation, wherein the students of different schools in Havelock Island had resorted to Strike, the Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray visited the island on 12th & 13th Aug. 2013 and took note of the situation. Consequent to the discussion held with the officials of the Directorate of Education, the MP observed numerous shortcomings in the functioning of schools in the island.

He noted that there was an acute shortage of teachers, amenities and infrastructure in schools. According to the information gathered from different sources, there are shortage of teachers, vice Principal, Head Masters, Lab Assistants, Attendents, shortage of classrooms, dilapidated toilet conditions, non-availability of water etc.  

Demanding early solution to the above issues, two parents namely Shri Shubash Baroi and Smti Deepika Halder have resorted to Hunger Strike until death.

The Member of Parliament after observing the situation has sent an SOS to the Secretary, Education, A&N Administration from Havelock, informing him of the situation and has requested for an early resolution of the burning issues.

Meanwhile the PCC President, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma, today met the Secretary Education and explained that the demands of the parents are genuine and may be resolved immediately for overall development of the student community of Havelock. The Secretary Education has given a patient hearing to Sharma and assured for immediate settlement of the demands at the earliest and also to take care of the interests of the student community of these islands.
