Car Nicobar, Aug. 13: The turbulent strong sea waves have been eroding the long belt of the coastal areas at many locations in Car Nicobar for the last many years. Now the situation has worsened and is alarming. The Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray during his recent visit to this Island found that the fast erosion of the coastal land is posing threat to the nearby coastal villages.

Nicolas a resident of Mus village told MP that the Sea waves have encroached vast portions of coastal land and people residing near the coast are scared of the situation. He urged Shri Ray to take up the issue so that a concrete solution is obtained.

The MP was told that the work order of constructing Sea Wall was given to a firm in December 2011, but due to some reasons the work could not be started. The contract was to build a sea wall of around 800 meters length and the work had to be completed within 16 months. But the demand of the People has remained a dream till now. The villagers of Mus are afraid that if the erosion continues at this pace then the survival of the village would be under question mark.

In other coastal areas too, similar dangerous situation has created panic among the villagers. The Sea waves have eaten away a vast area of land mass at Malacca Coast. Though the village has been shifted to new safer area after the Boxing Dat, but the fast eroding landmass from the coast of Murugan Temple at Malacca to the Indian Air Force Base camp at Kakana is a matter of great concern, the MP observed.

Sea Water intrudes into the residential areas at many places and even crosses the road between Passa Bridge and Tee-Top village, during high tide. People find it difficult to pass through the road due to this flood like situation. The land area of the Car Nicobar is shrinking and the people are left on their fate.

Expert Civil Engineers from Port Blair told MP over phone that laying down of the tetra pods at the coasts or through bolder pitching the damage can be stopped. Construction of Sea wall is the best option though, but for the instant control other options are to be explored to restrict any further erosion of the coastal land.  Shri Ray has assured the People that he would take up the matter with concerned authorities.

Port Blair, Aug. 12: The PCC President, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt Governor for opening of a new college for the islands for the benefit of students who do not get chance to get admission in the existing colleges.

Sharma explains that, it was in the year of 1967 under the active captaincy of then Chief Commissioner, Late Mahavir Singh, IAS a Govt Degree College, now Jawaharlal Nehru Rajakiya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) augmented by evening classes for some years. Due to increasing demand for higher education some PG Courses also been added in the same College. To train the local youths in the field of teaching, a teacher’s training college was started in 1981 which has been functioning in the name of Tagore Govt College of Education. To augment scope of higher education in the Islands, a new college was also established in 1993-94 at Car Nicobar, which was subsequently shifted to Mayabunder and named as Mahatma Gandhi Govt College (MGGC) catering to the needs of the students of North and Middle Andaman as well as some students of Nicobar Groups of Islands. To fulfil the needs of Technical Education, a Polytechnic imparting three years Diploma courses in Engineering was established during the year 1984 and during the year 2009 an Institute of Technology named as Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology got established in our territory.

But this increasing number of Institutions is still insufficient to cater to the needs of increasing student’s population of +2 pass outs. The JNRM, Port Blair and MGGC, Mayabunder added together has an intake capacity of 1485, where as in the academic year 2012-13, the JNRM, Port Blair alone received a total of 1700 applications for admission in various under graduate courses. To provide admission to the students in access of the sanctioned capacity of the College, as an interim measure 2nd shift was introduced in six undergraduate disciplines to accommodate 360 students, nevertheless the status of which for the current academic session 2013-14 is still in doldrums.

During the current academic session 2013-14, it is learnt that the JNRM, Port Blair has received 2100  applications for admission in the under graduate courses, which is much beyond the sanctioned capacity of the existing degree colleges. Hence, in the prevailing scenario, an appreciable number of students aspiring to pursue higher education will not be able to get admission in our colleges and for most of them it will be beyond financial capability to get admission in the Colleges at Mainland and pursue the same by incurring heavy expenditure on study, hostel and travel to & fro main land.

Sharma has further stated that, it is reliably learnt that, in the current annual plan of A&N Administration, a plan provision has been made to establish a new Degree College, which would certainly be a welcome step for the aspiring youths who cannot afford higher education on mainland colleges.

Moreover high literacy percentage in these islands shows how the islanders have understood the value of education, which is a good sign for the development of these islands.

The PCC President has thus made a request to the Lt. Governor to explore possibilities to establish a new degree college during the current academic year, so that legitimate aspiration of the student community of the Island Territory gets realized.
