Car Nicobar, Aug. 11: The Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray during his visit to Car Nicobar recently visited the Bishop John Richardson District Hospital at Car Nicobar where he interacted with the staff of the hospital. The MP was astonished to know that many service related issues of the staff Nurses are still kept pending. When asked by Shri Ray, the Nurses informed that they have not been given the benefits of the ‘Assured Career Progression’ or the MACP yet, after so many years.

There are Nurses who have rendered more than 25 years of service, but still waiting for justice. The irony is that even the staff Nurses, who are more than 10 years junior to them, are drawing salaries equal or more than senior Nurses.

The staffs informed the MP that they are aggrieved of the in-transparent and controversial Transfer Policy too. They were told at the time of Transfer from Port Blair that their tenure is only for 2 years, but they have not been transferred even after completing 2 years. Most of the Nursing staff are above 53 years of age and they all are still serving in difficult conditions here, leaving their families and children at Port Blair. Many such lady staffs are having chronic diseases for which they need specialized medical care, which are not available at Car Nicobar.

The Staff Nurses also thanked the MP for taking up the issue of revising the transfer tenure in southern group, and hoped that if the Policy of the Administration framed in 2007 will be implemented by the Health Department.

The Member of Parliament, Bishnu Pada Ray has assured them that he would take up the transfer issue in the forthcoming meeting with the Chief Secretary and would request him to restrict the tenure in the Southern group of Islands for one year only.

During his visit to the wards, it was noticed by the MP that the cases of TB are increasing at an alarming pace, which is a matter of great concern.

There is a need to implement the DOTS scheme in true letter and spirit, Ray felt. He also talked with the Tribal leaders at the hospital, who also echoed the same. The leaders expressed that the department should launch an intensive survey in the villages and proper remedial steps should be taken.

Survival International has published a photographic gallery ahead of UN Indigenous Day on August 9, showing some of the extraordinary skills of the world’s tribal peoples and the threats they face to their lives and lands.

From the hunting peoples of Canada to the hunter-gatherers of Africa, tribal peoples have found ingenious ways of surviving in varied and often hostile terrains over thousands of years, while maintaining the delicate balance between man and nature.

The gallery reveals how the Jarawa of India’s Andaman Islands spit plant sap over bees’ hives in order to repel the bees and remove the honeycomb; that the Moken ‘sea gypsies’ have developed the unique ability to focus under water in order to dive to the sea floor for food; and that ‘Pygmy’ hunters are such proficient mimics they can imitate the sound of a distressed antelope in order to lure another out of the bush.

Survival’s photographic gallery for Indigenous Day also features images of the Awá, Earth’s most threatened tribe. The Awá care for different species of orphaned baby monkeys by suckling them, and extract the resin of the Brazilian redwood tree to light their houses at night.

But today the Awá are threatened with extinction due to illegal logging of their forest and violent attacks by invaders in their territory. Survival has called on the Brazilian government to expel the illegal loggers, settlers and ranchers from the Awá’s land as a matter of urgency.
