Port Blair, Nov. 6: In order curb the menace of adulterated food packaging, Food Safety Officers from the District Administration conducted surprise raids on various ice cream manufacturing units functioning in Port Blair. It was found that four such units were operating in gross violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation 2011.

The products were found packed in wrappers and other boxes without mentioning of the name and address of the manufacturer, date of manufacture/packaging, best before date for use, net weight and the ingredients used in its preparation etc. Huge quantities of ice cream products such as cup ices, cone ice, choco bars, milk kulfi, ice candies, sweetened ice and bars etc. were seized from these units.

Similar inspection was also carried out at a manufacturing unit of carbonated water and huge quantities of unlabelled bottles of carbonated water in different colours and flavours were also seized. Strict action has been initiated against the violators as per the provision for the FSS Act, 2006.

The Commissioner, Food Safety hereby cautions all the Food Business Operators (FBO) strictly adhere to the provisions of FSS Act, Rules & Regulations and if anyone found violating the same, stern actions will be initiated against them. Further the General Public is also requested to keep vigil and inform of any such irregularities noticed by them to the District Control Room on 1070.
